When learning the rudiments of navigation, the first rule usually signaled for port entries is to approach the mouth in the middle, especially if we do not know the port we are entering. This is to avoid the possibility of rocks or other submerged obstacles.
This would appear to be the cause of thesinking of a 12-meter sailboat in Otranto harbor(PHOTO in Lecce Prima opening) , but investigations to learn the real dynamics of the accident are ongoing. Certainly there was a violent collision, then the rush to the mooring to try to secure the boat, but it was already too late, the 12-meter sinks mercilessly. Four people were on board, a 46-year-old American man with a friend of the same age and two women of Spanish and Swiss nationality, respectively. The gaping hole in the hull was too large and the boat sank within minutes, but fortunately it had already made it to one of the floating docks at the marina and lay on the bottom remain largely out of the water. Recovery then will not be difficult; the damage, which is certainly significant, remains to be assessed.
