ISAF (the International Sailing Federation) has released the list of nominees (five male and five female) for the ISAF Rolex Sailor of the Year award, veritable “Oscars of world sailing” awarded based on the votes of a panel of judges who took into account sporting achievements between September 2014 and August 2015. Do you agree with the jury’s choices (which will reveal the names of the winners at the awards ceremony on November 10 in Sanya, China)? Which sailors do you think are missing from the roll call?
THE MEN.
Peter Burling & Blair Tuke (NZL ) – 49er phenomena, have won 20 regattas in a row including the Olympic test event in Rio, the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Hyeres, Weymouth and Portland, and the Princesa Sofia Trophy. They are also two cornerstones on Emirates New Zealand in the America’s Cup. Burling also won the 2015 Moth World Championship.
Loick P eyron (FRA ) – Foxy Loick Peyron managed to win the Route du Rhum (complete with a record, 7 days, 15 hours, 8 minutes and 32 seconds). After 32 years of trying. Moreover, replacing at the last Armel Le Cleac’h injured on Banque Populaire VII.
Giles Scott (GBR) – Finn ace, overshadowed by compatriot Ben Ainslie, Scott is undefeated on the Olympic drift since 2013. He is in the America’s Cup with the BAR team.
Ian Walker (GBR) – The winner of the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race, skipper of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, could not be absent from the roll call: an Arab team that had very little Arab in it.
Ian Williams (GBR) – In 2015 Ian Williams was crowned king of match racing, after winning for the fifth time The ISAF Match Racing World Championship
WOMEN.
Sarah Ay ton (GBR) – Sara Ayton, after Olympic gold, rediscovered herself as an ace in the Extreme Sailing Series (the only woman on the circuit), leading The Wave, Mascati’s amanita team winning five out of seven regattas. Phenomenon.
Sam Davies (GBR ) – The skipper of Team SCA. Awarded for commitment and for being one of the leaders of the women’s comeback in round-the-world sailing after more than a decade.
Elena Kalinina (RUS) – In 2014 she finished second at the Formula Kite World Championship in Turkey. It has been undefeated ever since. And to think that he is not yet 18 years old!
Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen (DEN) – One of the most experienced women on the Women’s World Match Racing Tour, won the world championship. He has 20 years of experience in 40 different monotypes.
Charline Picon (FRA) – Won everything there was to win in the RS:X class, qualifying for the 2016 Olympics (this will be her second participation).
