The Caprera Sailing Center has launched a sailing and marine ecosystem monitoring course in La Maddalena Park. Medplastic and Journal of Sailing come on board as media partners

Medplastic ‘s long summer in defense of our sea has begun. While the Instagram contest “No Plastic” is proceeding apace (by the way: take a picture every time you pick up a piece of trash in the water during your cruise and post it on @journalofsailing or on the Facebook group Medplastic Team, we will award the most beautiful ones), membership is growing and so are the signatories of our “Ecomariner’s Manifesto” (downloadable HERE), also our friends from the Caprera Sailing Center are getting busy.

We liked the initiative they set up so much right away that the Sailing Newspaper and Medplastic became its media partners: a sailing course that turns into a monitoring of the marine ecosystem of the Maddalena Park. Precisely in the waters where, next August 26, the TAG Heuer VELA Cup organized in cooperation with the CVC will be staged. The data collected by the students will be logged and certified by the park authority, thus acquiring scientific value. And we, of course, will give you an account of it, both in the magazine and on our websites.

BROWSE AND COLLECT
The formula of the “Navigation & Environment” course is interesting: there will be a CVC instructor and a biologist on board along with the students. For the entire duration of the navigation, which will take place, again taking into account the weather and sea conditions, in the La Maddalena Archipelago, all fauna monitoring, plankton sampling and marine litter (marine litter) census activities will be carried out.

Monitoring and collection actions will be possible both while the boat is stationary and while sailing, by means of a small Manta Trawl (a rectangular metal mouth, to which a fine-mesh net is attached, equipped with a flow meter to assess the volume of water filtered, which will allow the floating parts to be hoisted on board). In addition, water samples will be observed in the evening sessions using a microscope in order to check for the presence of microplastics.

The course will run on a weekly basis, with a schedule starting tomorrow and running through the third week of September. Crews will sail aboard a Jeanneau Oceanis 41.1 with four cabins. All course participants will be asked to sign Medplastic’s Ecomarine Manifesto. About https://centrovelicocaprera.it
