Did you know that you can visit the mythical island of Montecristo in the Tuscan archipelago with your boat, from March to October (July and August excluded). Good news.
But get a feel for the conditions under what are, to say the least, ultra-restrictive and very expensive. Here is the excerpt from www.islepark.it:
– access is restricted to daytime only (no stopping at night) for one boat at a time up to 16 meters in length with a maximum of 15 people on board. Only 3 accesses per week are allowed, avoiding overlap with the Park’s guided tour schedule
– It costs 100 euros up to 10 m in length, over 10 m and up to 16 m 500 euros. Each person boarded must also pay 25 euros.
– the visit will be conducted by the Carabinieri Foresters. You can only go ashore at Cala Maestra and visit the museum (bathing is prohibited)
– For reservations: Carabinieri Biodiversity Department, Follonica (GR), tel no. 0566 40611, e-mail 043591.001@carabinieri.it
The moral: besides the exorbitant cost if you try to book a visit with your boat you will be lucky if you can find a free space in the calendar. A missed opportunity, all that would be needed is to copy what the Spanish are doing to have the island of Cabrera, also a Natural Park, visited to make a Mediterranean paradise truly usable, respecting all the constraints that an area under strict environmental constraints.
