If there is one shipyard we can call lively, it is undoubtedly Ice Yachts, which has just announced the design of the new Ice 82 Racer – Cruiser, a model created for fast offshore sailing.
The design (the work of Umberto Felci) was focused on obtaining an all-around, fast and comfortable boat that would allow for long and safe sailing in any sea and in any conditions, also winking at Maxi circuit racing and long-distance offshore racing.
The research therefore took into account, on the one hand, offshore performance needed in long ocean races, raced very often under load-bearing conditions, and on the other hand, the ability to juggle the variable conditions typical of Mediterranean races, characterized instead by little wind and short waves.
The hull, with its taut lines and slightly flared sides, is striking for its wide, prominent stern, relatively low on the water, and powerful bow entries; the main section, as much as possible, is contained. Completing the hydrodynamic package is a latest-generation lifting keel, which, with its 5-meter dive and nearly 2-meter excursion, allows not only to enjoy great performance, but also to reach the most protected bays. The significantly elongated center rudder is designed to make this 80-footer extremely maneuverable and responsive.
The construction will be made entirely of infusion-rolled carbon fiber, a necessary condition to keep the overall displacement within 30 tons of weight.
THE HABITABILITY STUDIES
The deck layout includes a double cockpit, with two completely watertight and independent entrances. This choice allows for two possible interior arrangements, in line with the semi-custom philosophy, thus definitely customized by the owner.
It will in fact be able to have the master stateroom aft, designed to be a large “suite” and complete with independent facilities, leaving the other cabins forward, with direct sailor access from the bridge. Or it may have the owner’s stateroom in the bow and then an aft development of the rest of the cabins, detaching the crew area in particular, directly connected to the galley area and maneuvering cockpit via aft access.
Both include high-end solutions such as a shower with hydromassage , private office, walk-in gymnasium and furnishings such as the Magic-Mirror.
A very technological, mainly lacquered and “structural” interior can be made, as well as a more classic one, making the furniture “lightened” and veneered in the desired essence.
The great attention to weight containment is evident stylistically from the use of a few predominant materials, often left “exposed,” in some places without the addition of various paneling and covers. A choice that sometimes makes the structure “visible,” allows the different materials to be appreciated and felt in their essence, and in essence, makes the medium being used more perceptible and understandable.
The binding element at the stylistic level of ICE 82 is certainly light, emphasized by glossy surfaces, light colors, and large “open space” areas.
