Ice Sailing, when the passion for sailing stops at nothing

If sailing is your passion but you live in a place so cold that the surface of the water freezes in winter, do you give up your sport or “convert” it?

The answer that the athletes portrayed in these spectacular photos would probably give is obviously the latter. We are talking about “ice sailing,” a sport that is very popular in northern European countries and in the States. The images we offer here were taken, just these days, on the Vistula Lagoon in the Polish sector, where the 2017 Junior and Ice-Optimist World and European Championships are taking place.

Yes, you got that right, this is not just some kids having fun but a real competition, complete with buoys, rules and race committee to enforce them.

There were as many as 145 entries in this latest rainbow event, nothing to rival the numbers in our top sailing events.

The vehicles on which these races are run are quite simple. Athletes position themselves inside a kind of “single-seater” equipped with a double skate. A typical single-drift rig, Optimist or similar, is installed on this, and that’s it. Judging from the helmets, speeds must be particularly high and “scuffling” a possible eventuality.
