It has been said for many years now that electric is the future of sailing, the natural vocation of our sport and passion. All true. In fact, the sailboat is quintessentially the symbol of the unpolluted nautical medium. Propulsion has thus become an object of research by many companies, some of which specialize in electrics, to try to obtain engines that extend the cruising range without consuming a drop of fuel. The reality today, however, is still far from fully achieving this goal, although there is no shortage of electric-powered (range-limited) or hybrid boats on the market. So if we wanted to search the market for one of these boats, who should we turn to? Let’s look at some of the examples on the market.
SAFFIER SE 27
A fully electric-powered boat, nameplate Torqueedo, with a 4.0 Kw propulsion and an engine-only range that will vary from 5 to 8 hours depending on the regimes of use (cruising speed or low speed), a reasonable time for a boat designed for day sailing and that will be capable of significant sailing performance. www.saffieryachts.com
BALTIC 68 CAFE RACER
The Café Racer will be an environmentally friendly 68-footer for semi-series production, with the first yacht scheduled for delivery in early 2021. The new boat will feature the latest eco-friendly construction materials and a low-emission propulsion unit thanks to a 30kW electric propulsion unit. Hydrogeneration, solar panels, and wooden exterior surfaces are designed to drastically reduce its environmental impact and are among the features that reflect a yacht that wants to meet the challenges of the 21st century. www.balticyachts.fi
SPIRIT 111
Powered by a Torqeedo Deep Blue 100i system, with a 100 kW electric thruster and four Deep Blue lithium batteries (developed with BMW) that can provide up to 40 miles of range at a speed of eight knots. The yacht can run for up to four days at anchor without having to connect to shore power or start the two 25kW Deep Blue DC on-board generators. Last bit of trivia before we talk about the boat: the tender will also be propelled by an electric outboard, the Torqeedo Cruise 10.0 Tiller, which develops 12 kW of power.
TOMORROW S30
Thanks to the proven Torqeedo system, the Domani S30 sails “on motor” in electric mode. An ideal solution for a boat that is short in length and designed primarily for day sailing. The hours of range, less than 10 at cruising speed, are more than enough to get in and out of port considering the sailing capabilities of the S 30. www.domaniyachts.com
WINDELO
This line of eco-friendly catamarans not only has propulsion, which is hybrid, but also construction made from a mixture of natural fibers derived from basalt. The engine is hybrid, electric and diesel, a compromise that, while it does not eliminate fuel consumption altogether, also makes these boats more versatile for long cruises. www.windelo-catamaran.com
