The
first good example, in order of time, was set by the Zaoli sailmaker who, in order to help in the fight against the coronavirus, set out to produce free masks for the San Remo Hospital (we told you about it HERE). This has prompted many other sailmakers in Italy to imitate the gesture: again W Sail in Liguria comes to mind, Olimpic Sails in Friuli Venezia-Giulia, Sailing Italia Services in Sicily, Challenger Sails in Marche, but we are sure there are many more around the Boot.

Last but not least, the initiative of the Veleria San Giorgio, a historic nautical accessories company (it was founded in 1926) in Casarza Ligure (Genoa), which set out to produce surgical masks free of charge, with a production of 1,000 pieces per day for the Liguria Region Health System’s ASL4.

“We manufacture life jackets, which fall under personal protective equipment,” explains Anton Francesco Albertoni, the company’s owner and former president of UCINA (now Confindustria Nautica). “So we know very well what are the technical and regulatory standards required in this industry. So when the shortage of masks became apparent in all its dramatic dimension, and an old order of masks intended for the company placed in China, but which we wanted to, how should we say, turn over to ASL4 at that point, was blocked in customs, we decided to get involved ourselves.”

Having obtained the specifications of materials, protection and packaging characteristics, the design office of Veleria San Giorgio quickly developed prototypes that were sent to the relevant offices for certification. That came immediately. “We obtained certification for all four models that we had submitted for testing. So we started production.”
