EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VELA CUP IN 11 QUESTIONS
- Where and when?
Monday, Aug. 26 in northeast Sardinia, Caprera, in the beautiful bay of Porto Palma, home to Italy’s most famous sailing school, Centro Velico Caprera. A unique location among crystal waters, wilderness and historical monuments, such as Garibaldi’s house and tomb!
- Why specifically on a Monday?
To meet not only all sailors on vacation with their boats, but also those who rent a boat! Since the boats are rented Saturday on Saturday, anyone who wants can come and have their week’s vacation in the Sailing Archipelago and participate in what will be a great sailing festival!
- Speaking of rentals, are there any conventions?
North Sardinia Sail charters boats for the Vela Cup, based in Cala dei Sardi a few miles from Caprera. info: tel. 3204988169, www.nsscharter.com; regarding search/off boarding find him at www.velacup.it with My Match Race(https://www.velacup.it/cerco-offro-imbarco/)
- But is it true that those who participate get the ferry for free, for themselves, the crew (car INCLUDED)?
It’s all very true! Vincenzo Onorato fell in love with VELA Cup Caprera and decided to support it (as well as try to win it with as many as three of his “Mascalzone Latino!”): Onorato Armatori will offer free transportation on Tirrenia and Moby for deck passage and cars in tow. You will only pay port and cabin fees, of course (info at https://www.velacup.it/tappa/caprera/):
These are the valid dates for the convention:
(upon request and subject to availability)
– from Livorno, Piombino, Genoa and Civitavecchia to Olbia: August 16 to 23, 2019;
– From Olbia to Livorno, Piombino, Civitavecchia and Genoa: Aug. 26 to Sept. 01, 2019
ORDINARY 100% DISCOUNT available at the time of booking, applicable to no. 7 passengers and related vehicles (car, van up to 6 mt, trolley up to 8 mt). Fees and fees charged. HERE IS THE TUTORIAL TO GET THE FREE FERRY
- Who can participate?
Any kind of boat, no tonnage certificate is required. From dinghies to maxi yachts, it is uana “democratic” demonstration! And there are prizes for (almost) everyone, both for results on the water and by drawing lots; this year, in addition to the various regatta and cruise categories, “vintage” hulls are also awarded!
- What about moorings and anchorages?
Porto Palma is a bay totally sheltered from all winds in summer with room for more than a hundred boats at anchor, sandy bottoms from 3 to 8 meters. The Caprera Sailing Center is based here, with a beautiful beach where there is the Vela Cup Point for registration starting Sunday 25, instruction delivery and Gift Bag. There will also be a kiosk to refresh you with drinks!
- What will the route be like?
Departure to Porto Palma, islands of the Bisce, Monks, then return on arrival in Porto Palma. Total miles about 18 (reductions are expected in case of weak wind, but don’t worry, there is usually no shortage of breeze!).
- How do I sign up? How much does it cost?
Starting from 85 euros, online at the VELA Cup website at https://www.velacup.it/tappa/caprera/ or directly at Porto Palma from Saturday, August 24 (VHF channel 72). Info: tel. 3924563708
- If I wanted to keep the boat in port, what are the nearby marinas?
Marina dell’Orso di Poltu Quatu, tel. 0789 99477 / 0789 950084, www.poltu-quatu.com; Porto Massimo (Maddalena), tel. 0789 734033 – 346 1592305, www.portomassimo.it; Consorzio Marina Cannigione (Arzachena Gulf) also with buoy field, tel. 346 806 5848, www.marinacannigione.it
- For those who want to sleep on the ground, are there any solutions?
Absolutely yes: Residence Blubaita (Punta Tegge La Maddalena), www.blubaitalamaddalena.com; Hotel Excelsior (Lungomare Amendola, La Maddalena), www.excelsiormaddalena.com; Grand Hotel Resort Ma&Ma (Punta Tegge, La Maddalena), www.grandhotelmaema.com
