A nice way to retire the “old” Robertissima III winning the 2015 Barcolana in a big way. For 2016 comes the new Robertissima VI, it promises to be revolutionary and aims to win, after two consecutive second places, the Rolex Maxi 72 World Championship to be held in Sept. 2016 in Porto Cervo. Owner and helmsman Roberto Tomasini Grinover, tactician Vasco Vascotto, and project manager Federico Michetti announced the construction of the new boat, which will be designed by the firm of Spaniard Marcelino Botin and built in Dubai by high-tech construction giant Premier Composite.
“It will be an unconventional boat,” Roberto Tomasini, Vascotto and Michetti anticipate “without compromise. To go faster than the current Robertissima, something new must be done. We aim to be the new benchmark both in terms of construction, focusing on unprecedented rigidity so as to “unload” all the propulsive energy without dispersing it, and in terms of design, which will definitely be different, innovative“.
Designer Marcelino Botin’s mission is to make an absolutely innovative boat that breaks with current patterns, the ones that make TP 52 and Maxi 72 designs very similar to each other.
Botin is used to challenges like this. The son of a Spanish banking dynasty (Banco Santander), he is one of the innovators of world sailing. He was the chief designer of the America’s Cup challenges in 2004 and 2011, designed some of the best boats for the Volvo Ocean Race. His latest winning design is the TP 52 Azzurra, world champion in its category.
