In solo racing, concentration and lucidity are everything. If you lose them, you take a big risk. Remember Alex Thomson, who at the last Route du Rhum was in the lead but ended up stranded in the rocks in northern Guadeloupe after he fell asleep for longer than expected as his electric-pulse clock ran out of power?
Also a victim of a stroke of sleep was Cassandre Blandin, who aboard her Figaro Klaxoon C was taking part in her first Solitaire Urgo Le Figaro (the solo stage race also featuring our Alberto Bona, we told you about it here). While en route to Kinsale (in Ireland, the destination of the first leg that started in Nantes, France), the experienced sailor crashed into a freighter this morning.
He explains the incident this way, “I was seasick the whole second night of the regatta, there was a lot of sea, an off-axis tide, wind against current. With fatigue, I lost a lot of energy. I fell asleep in the cockpit without realizing it. The shock of the blow woke me up.”
Fortunately, the 29-year-old Cassandre is fine; only the bowsprit was damaged in the collision, but the sailor opted to retire from the race.
