The government has given the green light to drilling off the Tremiti Islands, one of the sailing havens in the Gargano Park (Foggia, Italy). On Dec. 22, the Ministry of Economic Development signed the decree awarding the concession to Petrolceltic Italia srl, which is owned by Ireland’s Petroceltic International and specializes in oil & gas exploration, extraction and transportation. The affected area has an area of about 373 square kilometers and was granted to the multinational company for four years at 1,900 euros per year (5.16 euros per square kilometer).
QUESTION FROM FOUR YEARS AGO
“The application was submitted four years ago but we thought that, given the passage of all this time, it would not be granted,” denounces Green Party leader Angelo Bonelli to Repubblica, “and instead just before Christmas here is the decree. This will affect a natural oasis, as so many others in Italy have been affected by oil exploration, from the Adriatic to the Sicilian Channel. This concession will raise a fuss: already in August Tremiti fishermen protested against this measure.”
THE POLEMICS.
On Facebook meanwhile, a group named “No to drilling near the Tremiti, Gargano, Adriatic” has also sprung up. In September, ten regions (Basilicata, Marche, Puglia, Sardinia, Abruzzo, Veneto, Calabria, Liguria, Campania, and Molise) filed six referendum questions against drilling within 12 miles of the coast and in the territory with the Supreme Court.
