Regarding the dismasting of the Grand Soleil 80(Read HERE aboutour onboard test), which occurred during the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup regattas in Porto Cervo, our editorial staff contacted Raffaele Burgio, Cantiere del Pardo’s custom line manager, to learn more details about the incident. The boat was equipped with Axxon carbon mast and shrouds also made of carbon.

This is his report on the accident, which we recall did not involve any crew members.

The incident occurred shortly after the start, upwind in about 20 knots of wind and a slightly formed wave. The crew heard a creaking sound and soon after, the mast gave way. The break occurred just above the boom attachment. The technical causes of the incident are not yet clear, but we can already rule out that there were structural problems with the boat. All moorings attachments are intact and no structural anomalies were found to the hull. With the men from Axxon, the supplier of the tree, we are analyzing all the details of the incident“.
