giraglia-shock
We said it would be a difficult night at the Giraglia Rolex Cup because of the gale
, In fact, wind and sea claimed three “victims.” 60 miles from Genoa, the Grand Solei 341 Mariel by Federico Massari, 20 miles after rounding the Giraglia rock, he launched May Day for losing his rudder. The French Coast Guard intervened and sent a helicopter. The crew was rescued and is now in Macinaggio, Corsica (all are well).

BUSY NIGHT FOR COAST GUARD
Another boat, a Comet 45S, Alberto Pagliano’s Ireal, with 11 sailors on board, called for help from the Genoa Harbor Master’s Office after breaking its rudder 25 miles in front of La Spezia. To pick up part of the crew at first light today, the helicopter from Sarzana flew up. The operation was complex due to strong winds and from the heavy sea. Four of the eleven sailors were first transshipped to Sarzana and then transferred to the La Spezia emergency room: they are doing well although they are very much tried from the night spent at the mercy of the sea. A patrol boat with the rest of the crew on board escorted them to the port of Spezia. Another vessel, Daniel Gallina’s X-Elor, X-412, experienced a breakdown and was rescued at 1 a.m. by coast guard patrol boats five miles in front of Portofino. The boat, with 11 sailors on board, was towed to the Santa Margherita marina.
