The coastal races of the Giraglia Rolex Cup ended in Saint Tropez(Baltic 78 Lupa of London won the handicap race in Group 0, Jean Jacques Chaubard’s TP 52 Team Vision Future won in IRC Group A, Sun Fast 3200 Epsilon ‘s Jean Rameil in IRC Group B, Luigi Cimolai’s Southern Star in ORC Group 0, Luca Celeghini’s Freya in ORC Group A and Franco Salmoiraghi ‘s Aria di Burrascadi in ORC Group B), the offshore “long” starts today at 12 noon, with 269 boats at the start.
WHO WILL WIN THIS YEAR?
The 241-mile course will take the fleet to round the Giraglia rock in Corsica and then head for Genoa with an arrival at the Yacht Club Italiano. The boat to beat will be Magic Carpet Cubed, Lindsay Owen Jones’ Wally 100 winner on corrected time in 2015. Among the participants, eyes are on the very fast Maxi 72 Peter Ogden’s Jethou, Baltic 78 Lupa of London, the VOR 70 Lionel Pean’s SFS, Vincenzo Onorato’s Cookson 50 Mascalzone Latino, Roberto Lacorte’s Vismara Mills 62 Supernikka, Austin Van t Wout’s Contest 72 PH3 and Carlo Puri Negri’s Farr 70 Atalanta II. Three wonderful classic boats will also be racing: the 15-meter S.I Mariska (built in 1908), the 26-meter schooner Lelantina (designed and built in 1937) and Moonbeam of Fife, 30 meters long and built in 1903. THE WEATHER.
Sunny weather and winds between 10 and 15 knots are forecast for today around 12 noon start time. On the way down to Corsica, the wind is likely to pick up and turn south-southwest.
