At the Genoa Boat Show, we stopped by the Harken booth to see the sales manager, Emanuele Cecchini. Raised in Rome but adopted from Varese, class of 1964, Cecchini has a long palmares of sailing success. He has raced on Three Quarter Tonner, Half Tonner, Swan, monotypes such as Mumm 30, 36 and Melges 32. He took part in several Admiral’s Cups, Sardinia Cup, Maxi Worlds, and the 50′ Worlds, which between ’85 and ’95 were the real antechamber to the America’s Cup. He has been aboard many Moro di Venezia Maxi, and Giorgio Carriero’s legendary Mandrakes. This is to let you know that when it comes to deck equipment, his advice is really valuable.

We asked him two fateful questions: the first is about electric winches. Is it worth having them on board? Why yes and why not? Then we talked about deck equipment and how to choose it. Here is what he told us.
