2019 Foiling Week Garda “We are all in the same BOTTLE”
From July 10-14 at Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Foiling Week launches the “we’re all in the same bottle” initiative, the aim is to stop the use of single-use plastics along the shores of Lake Garda. #stopusingleuseplastic

Lake Garda is one of the world’s most popular destinations among sailing enthusiasts. All kinds of sports are practiced on its waters and coasts, from kitesurfing and windsurfing to mountain biking and climbing. It is one of Italy’s top tourist destinations with more than 20 million visitors a year. Municipalities and local communities already take good care of Lake Garda: the waters are generally considered clean, however, the presence of microplastics is in question. Lake Garda is one of the largest alpine lakes in Europe, and its microplastics can end up in rivers downstream and eventually in the Adriatic Sea. Last March, the European Parliament passed a law to ban single-use plastics from 2021. Across Europe, some cities and regions have brought forward the ban on single-use plastics. We propose that all city councils on Lake Garda take the same step and immediately ban the use of single-use plastics.

Foiling Week is one of the most important sailing events in the world, which started on Lake Garda in 2014. We consider it our “home.” We are there and want to continue to take care of its future. Sustainability is one of the founding values of Foiling Week. Single-use plastic is banned from Foiling Week events. Therefore, we have started a petition to extend this ban to the shores of Lake Garda.

The races can be followed from shore thanks to the Sailmon system.

The Foiling SuMoth Challenge kick-off workshop
(Friday, July 12)

Foiling SuMoth Challenge is a design competition inspired by the need for more sustainable and efficient sailboat designs and production methods. The ultimate goal of this competition is to promote sustainable practices by challenging young naval architecture and engineering students in a friendly, technical and athletic competition.

Foiling SuMoth Challenge is sponsored by 11th Hour Racing, an international organization that establishes strategic partnerships within the sailing and marine communities to promote systemic and collaborative changes that benefit the health of our seas. 11th Hour Racing is proud to support this exclusive design competition and to promote sustainable shipbuilding practices that consider the environmental, social and economic impacts of the manufacturing process among future engineers, designers and builders.

Participating undergraduate students will have the opportunity to discuss with naval architects, composite builders, and coaches how to design, build sustainably, and sail a Moth.

The Multi Purpose eFoiler submissions presentation(Saturday, July 13)

Multi-Purpose eFoiler design challenge is a design competition for professional naval architects, engineers and designers willing to create a revolutionary electric hydrofoil concept.
