IMG-20160925-WA0002Third round of the Extreme Sailing Series in Madeira: the Extreme are fast, flying boats; making a mess is a snap. Champion Roman Hagara’s Austrian Red Bull Sailing Team sailed onto the starting line at top speed during the start, but passed too close to the Swiss of Alinghi and the stern of their boat hit the bow of the Swiss (Arnaud Psarofaghis, Nicolas Charbonnier, Timothé Lapauw, Nils Frei, Yves Detrey the crew members). Result, Alinghi’s dismasting, with a 16-foot carbon “pole” coming down (the Austrians hit a structural part of the rigging). This image well captures the incident that happened to the Swiss. And now there are already accusers: boats too fragile and dangerous? Fortunately, no one was hurt!
