“After years and years of following the exploits of great sailors around the oceans like Vittorio Malingri and Matteo Miceli, I decided to test myself as well.” This is what Andrea Barbera, a 40-year-old skipper from Agrigento, Italy, had told us after his solo tour of Sicily (accomplished aboard a 5-meter uninhabitable catamaran).
He grinded the 500-mile route (clockwise, starting from the port of San Leone, Agrigento) in 18 days and 12 stages. “But there is no sporting feat here. I did it primarily for myself.”
True, all true. The Solo Around Sicily project was born without a sponsor and has remained so: “Cost of undertaking, less than 1,000 euros. The only supporter was my club, the Punta Piccola Nautical Club, which provided 300 euros to cover some expenses. I salvaged a 20-year-old Class A rescuing it from demolition, filled the hulls with 60 empty plastic bottles as a flotation reserve, and made the decks by recycling battens from an old 50-foot Kevlar mainsail.”
The feat-which was widely followed-also earned him a nomination for TAG Heuer 2020 Sailor of the Year and a “Most Voted” award, given to the sailor with the most votes from the public. Andrea took 11,054 votes!
