Many of you are familiar with Giorgio Gaber’s famous song, “Right Left”-a provocative lyric against easy labels and clichés. What you may not know, however, is that the Milanese singer-songwriter harbored a hidden passion for sailing. We came into possession of the original manuscript of the song where Gaber ironically analyzed what was left and right in the boat. The lyrics, judged by his producer Aurelio Pesce to be too “niche” in terms of technical content, were rejected and replaced with the version you all know.
But here, according to Gaber what were the clichés that identified the “right” and the “left” on board. Many will crack a smile: these days, it’s gold!
We all lash out at history
But I say we are to blame
It is evident that people are unserious
When he talks about left or right.
But what is the right what is the left …
Spaghetti boat is left-wing, with roe, on the other hand, is a bit right-wing
Right of way is always right, especially if you have left tack
Giving bottom in the roadstead is from the left, the “luxury” marina is from the right
Bernard Moitessier was left-wing, Russell Coutts is a bit right-wing
Rolling cigarettes are left-handed; factory cigarettes are right-handed.
Throwing them overboard is a bit of a jerk, whether you’re left-wing or right-wing
The aluminum boat is from the left, the carbon boat is a little bit from the right
Solo Ocean is on the left, but the sponsor is definitely on the right
The air conditioner is on the right, the wind sleeve is on the left instead
The bow with the garrocci is left-handed, the rollafiocco is a bit right-handed
Tiller rudder is left-hand side, double wheel is somewhat right-hand side
Dacron sails are from the left, laminate is somewhat from the right
The skipper’s bathrooms are on the left, the master cabin is on the right
Who starts in the buoy mure to the left, if I catch him on the ground I give him a right….
RETURN: My little boat, my little boat, sailing is a matter of magic… It is a passion, the obsession that takes you agelessly, a passion that will never leave you again!
Hail Gaber!
