She retired from competitive sailing on September 2, 2010, after establishing a foundation to promote a sustainable future, but she has helped write important pages in ocean sailing, women’s and otherwise. Ellen MacArthur, British, class of ’76, is the woman of records: in 2000 she crossed the Atlantic from east to west in 14 days aboard a monohull and finished second overall in the 2000 Vendèe Globe, the round-the-world race by soltario and nonstop, in 94 days (a record for a woman on a monohull).
She holds the women’s multihull ocean crossing record (7 days and 3 hours). In 2005, with a 70-foot trimaran, he snatched the record for non-stop solo circumnavigation of the globe from Joyon (71 days 14 hours and 18 minutes: Joyon re-broke it in 2008).
Because: He proved that ocean sailing is not “man’s stuff” by shattering the records of his male colleagues.
