The passion for wood is common to so many boaters, as is the passion for classic boats. At one time Italy had a wealth of shipwrights while today this important figure is increasingly hard to find. In pandemic times comes good news for those who want to get closer to this world: the online propaedeutic course forapproaching the craft of shipwright. Let us specify at the outset that this course does not qualify for the profession, but it is an interesting opportunity to get closer to this world.
Shipwright: here is the preparatory course
The Romagna-based Vela e Legno association in Faenza is organizing a live web-based evening course that, while not qualifying for the profession, prepares the candidate to become a shipwright, i.e., one who will be able to build and repair wooden ships, boats and floats of up to 150 gross tons.
How the course works
The course will run from January 11 to March 27, 2021 through 22 biweekly online evening classes lasting 2.5 hours each, plus two in-person days at some shipyards on the Romagna coast and a museum (70 hours total). A maximum of 12 participants will be admitted to the course. The registration fee is 900 euros and will entitle participants to receive the reference text “Wooden Boats. Conscious Restoration” by Padua-based naval architect Leonardo Bortolami, the course instructor, and a certificate of participation. The registration deadline is January 9, 2021.
How to truly become an axe master
The “Preparatory Course on Approaching the Craft of Shipwright” organized by Sailing and Wood aims to create a skill base on the subject of wooden boat building and provide an opportunity to learn the topics covered in the exam to become a professional boat builder.
As per the Naval Regulations, in fact, among the requirements to qualify as a shipwright, in addition to being at least 21 years of age, are to have no convictions, to be registered in the Register of Technical Personnel in Naval Construction (Article 279 R.C.N.) and to have worked for at least 36 months as a trainee shipwright in a shipyard or shipbuilding establishment.
