In the boat not knowing an object or a term is a normal thing; no one is born with the notions and knowledge already in their head. Let’s take advantage of the summer then to brush up on nautical terms and concepts so that we can arrive at fall sailings ready to have our say.
Dead Work/Living Work: the part of the boat that is above the waterline; the part of the boat that is below the waterline.
Pagliolo: flooring made of wooden boards that covers the bottom of a boat
Sheath: block consisting of a single pulley that can be opened so that a line can be introduced
Square: area of the boat where the officers originally ate lunch; in modern boats it is the area where the crew meets, usually in the middle of the boat
Bilge: the lowest and innermost part of the hull where sewage collects
