Having a portable VHF on board is convenient and useful if you don’t want to be isolated, learn about the technical features the device must have and find the right model for you.
Elements to pay attention to:
- Power, indicated in watts, is essential to recognize one VHF that will have clear and clean reception from another. One-watt power VHFs are to be used as secondary equipment, for example, for connection with the tender. Some models are equipped with the HI/LO function that indicates at what power level you are transmitting: whether high (5 W) or low (1W), a low transmitting power serves to keep battery consumption low,
- always in order to have good audio performance, it is important to have a function that filters out dirty signals,
- the presence of the Dual Watch (or Trial Watch) function, which allows active listening to be maintained on one or two service channels without leaving the watch on 16,
- thepower supply: a lithium battery guarantees a long life and the possibility of several charging cycles, better to also be provided with a power supply for 220, charging will be faster,
- Finally, don’t forget size, weight, screen readability, and ergonomics.
The Legislation
Having VHF on board, whether portable or fixed, is mandatory for vessels sailing beyond 6 miles from the coast. The user must have a limited radiotelephone certificate, which does not involve any examination but a simple communication to the Ministry, click here to view the form.
