Thirty years have passed since the launch of the first Dehler 34, and the German shipyard is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the launch of the new version designed by Judel&Vrolijk , which follows the one produced from 2002 to 2009.
CARBON AND PERFORMANCE
Karl Dehler, Dehler’s chief developer, explains the concept behind the boat: “The new Dehler 34 is a luxury performance cruiser that combines racer performance with spaciousness, typical of a cruiser. This is what has always characterized Dehler. But there is something new. The “Carbon Cage” structure, a carbon stiffening cage, makes the hull, constructed of vinylester sandwich, extremely rigid and more resistant to torsion than traditional constructions. They gain in performance, which is remarkable. During our sea outing, we appreciated the sensitivity at the helm and the course stability, although care must be taken to adjust the sails precisely so that the boat does not heel too much. In fact, the new 34 has a reduced waterline width that increases performance but reduces skid resistance. With the standard keel depth of 1.95 m we have, on 18 to 20 knots upwind we took a hand of reefing, leaving the small jib full at 105%.
ONE BOAT, THREE KEELS
The interior features two large cabins and a bathroom equipped with the “Uni Door” (a Dehler trademark), or a door that separates three spaces, thus ensuring maximum privacy with minimum clutter. The salon has two longitudinal sofas with good storage space, a large L-shaped kitchen and a chart table. In the bow, the owner can choose between two layout variations. As standard, the Dehler 34 has an aluminum rig with sail area (mainsail and jib) of 65 square meters. In addition, you can opt for an oversized shaft made of aluminum or carbon. Three keel variants are also available: a T-shaped racing keel with a draft of 2.10 m and two L-shaped keels with 1.95 m and 1.55 m draft. The boat is steered with a tiller or, alternatively, with a double wheel rudder. An eighteen-horsepower Volvo Penta is fitted as standard. Added to this are a number of optional extras, such as a swim platform and fixed bowsprit.
