At the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in Caprera on Monday, August 26, there is an opponent to beat: the Mascalzone Latino team, captained by Vincenzo Onorato. As we tell you in the almost “stenographic” account of the phone call between the editor of the Giornale della Vela Luca Oriani and Onorato below, the volcanic owner of Moby, Tirrenia and Toremar has fallen in love with the “Caribbean” format of the VELA Cup conceived in collaboration with the Centro Velico Caprera, and will line up three pearls from his “stable” on the starting line: including the Swan 38 and 65 and another team boat. Mascalzone Latino sailing school kids are also on board.

In addition, Onorato thought of a nice gift for participants: If you come to make the VELA Cup using Moby and Tirrenia ferries., August 16 to 23 for departure to Olbia and August 26 to September 01, 2019 for return from Olbia, you and your crew (up to 7 people, including cars!) will travel for free. From a vacation perspective, this is an unmissable opportunity!
But here is the account of the phone call from which it all originated:
“THIS IS THE REAL PROMOTION FOR SAILING.”
It’s 10 o’clock in the evening, the phone rings, “who’s bothering me at this hour?” The name of Vincenzo Onorato, an old friend of the Sailing Newspaper, appears on the phone screen.
“Hello Vincenzo, what’s up?”
“I just bought myself the Sailing Newspaper. I will be there.”
“But where?”
“To Caprera on August 26 for the VELA Cup. Great Idea; Bravo.”
“What will you be there with?”
“With three Mascalzone Latino, definitely with the Swan 38 and the 65 and another one: And I’m also bringing the guys from my Sailing School.”
“Thank you Vincenzo, you will see that you, your crew and the guys from Mascalzone will have a good time.”
“Luca, I’ll say it again…it’s a great idea to have the VELA Cup in Caprera, in the roadstead and on the beach.”
“Too good.”
“And I tell you what, for everyone who uses the ship to come to the Vela Cup with Moby and Tirrenia we offer free bridge passage and free cars.”
“Vincenzo is a wonderful promotion for the TAG Heuer Vela Cup on August 26 in Caprera,” he said.
“But you don’t realize the idea you had. This is the real promotion for sailing…people want to have fun. And sailing is the second most beautiful thing in life.”
“Don’t tell me what the first one is, I don’t want to know….”
“And I bring you the kids from Mascalzone Sailing School. You have no idea how good sailing does kids who live in Naples but before they came with us had never seen the sea…but the heart of Naples is the sea!”
“Beautiful Vincenzo, we’re going to entertain these kids, they need it!”
“Luca is the passion we old-timers have to pass on to the young people.”
“You are right, you know how much your and our family love the sea and sailing out of pure passion.”
“One last thing, I read that there is a ranking for vintage boats, I want to win it.”
“You must deserve it, Vincenzo….”
“Luca, I salute you. And make sure there is plenty of beer for everyone on the beach for the awards party….”
