The Comprehensive Protection Plan for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing issued by SUI Sailing (the Swiss equivalent FIV) for the restart of sailing courses and “post-lockdown” activity is a rather factual, no-nonsense text. We don’t want to make comparisons with Italy: Switzerland undoubtedly has an easier situation to manage and monitor (only inland waters, fewer card-carrying members, which still number about 20,000: a lot for a country of only 8.5 million inhabitants), but the rules are certainly very practical and with calls for individual responsibility: rules to draw from.

SWITZERLAND’S 10-POINT PLAN TO RESTART SAILING

Private family outings only
Only members of the same family/household are allowed to sail on yachts and dinghies, keeping the maximum limit of 5 people.

Sailing courses with a maximum of 5 people
1
instructor, 4 students maximum, always maintaining social distance, and possibly keeping the same group of people on multiple lessons to decrease contact.

No to courses for beginners
Courses for beginners (not able to put the boat in the water independently) are not possible, by curriculum, basic level courses require instructor assistance.

Alone on board
No to ‘instructor on board, lesson exclusively from the support “dinghy”. Pupils only on single boats/tables. Exception for children under the age of 14 who may be in pairs.

Risk assessment to be carried out by the ‘instructor
The
sailing instructor must complete the risk assessment form, ensuring that all protective measures are met and that tracking of participating students is possible.

Impossible to maintain safe distance aboard, no training/racing
It is clearly stated that it is impossible to maintain social distancing aboard yachts and dinghies. For this reason, regattas and team training are not possible for now.

Age limit at 65
To protect the most at-risk category, the over-65s will have to wait again; they will not be allowed to board but neither will they be able to “help out” with club activities on the ground.

Disinfect boat and personal equipment
Rudder bar/wheel, sheets, trapezes, tangon, life vest–everything must be disinfected before and after each sailing session. Materials should be assigned to each student who should not exchange them with other students. Personal wetsuit equipment and gloves are recommended.

Social spacing always
Limit of maximum 2 groups at the same time even for theory classes, groups to be at least 20 meters apart at all times, minimum personal interdistance 2 meters.

No shower or beer!
Precise directions on social distancing, mask use, for all phases even around the lesson at the sailing club access. Examples: no shower, no arriving or stopping at the club more than 10 minutes before or after class, no distribution of food or beer.
