If it happened, and it could happen, it would be a sailing story as beautiful as it is incredible. Remember Carlo Potestà, the owner of the Elan 410 Phantomas who was disqualified under Rule 69 from the 2014 Rome-Giraglia after winning it? The charge was that he had “given motor” during the race: the protest of some competitors was upheld and Potestà was first disqualified and then acquitted on appeal on procedural defects and insufficient evidence. In 2014 Potestà had also won the Rome X1 and many people maligned that success was due to a propulsion unrelated to wind. Well, this time at Roma X1 there has been a return to propeller plumbings, so theoretically there is little to suspect (although the diehards surely will), and the fact remains that Potestà is leading, still, the regatta in real time ahead of the entire fleet.
At the moment he is keeping behind in X1 the Class 40 Magalè of Alberto Bona, as well as the various Swan 65s, Comet 38s, Class 950s etc etc racing in the various classes, boats on paper much more accredited than his Elan 410 for the final victory.
As we write at the finish for Potestà there are about 60 miles to go and he has about a 10-mile lead over Bona, while the margin over the rest of the fleet is wider. Will it be the rematch of the year? It is too early to tell, but no doubt for the owner of Phantomas this must be a great treat, as well as a big headache for his detractors.
