hugo-bossBeastly? Phenomenal? Incredible? We really have no words to describe Alex Thomson’s Vendée Globe.: With one foil out of commission due to a collision with an unidentified object, he leads the fleet while keeping his pursuers at arm’s length. Today he reached Cape of Good Hope first, in 17 days, 22 hours and 58 minutes, literally shattering the previous record (22 days, 23 hours and 46 minutes, set by Armel Le Cleac’h in 2012). Just Le Cleac’h follows him 90 miles behind.

THE RECORD IS THERE BUT NOT THERE
But there is more. Before the accident that caused his foil failure, Hugo Boss covered 535.34 miles (at an average of 22.3 knots!) in 24 hours: effectively the new 24-hour mileage record, higher than the 534.48 miles grinded by Francois Gabart at the 2012/13 Vendée. Too bad for the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) it is not valid, because according to the rules there must be at least one mile difference to establish officiating. In short, Thomson surpassed Gabart by “only” 1,573 meters. The fastest sailor in the world aboard a 60-footer would have to give him 279 more (the nautical mile is 1,852 meters) to be officially considered one. Desk quibbles. Thomson is having a beastly, phenomenal, incredible regatta (let’s not forget that it is Thomson’s IMOCA 60 was the fastest 60-footer ever to reach the Equator). Thanks to his determination and a superboat, which can reach 30 knots with ease and whose tricks we reveal with a great infographic.
