Gulf of Cugnana, an oasis of blue waters and Mediterranean maquis

We start from the Gulf of Cugnana where Cala dei Sardi, the marina hosting the event, is located. Located in northeastern Sardinia, between Porto Rotondo and Portisco, this is a beautiful bay at the foot of the granite massif that reaches 650 meters. In fact, it is a true natural harbor sheltered from the strong winds that characterize the area. For those who go there by boat, it offers space for more than 100 boats at anchor and sandy bottoms from 3 to 8 meters.

The majestic vistas, crystal clear waters, and striking Mediterranean vegetation surrounding the bay make this an absolutely beautiful corner of paradise.

Soffi and Mortorio, pristine islands of the Emerald Coast

Next, let us turn to the two courses of the TAG Heuer Vela Cup Cala dei Sardi – Costa Smeralda/Porto Rotondo regatta/sailing race to be held on August 28. Here, too, we sail to incredible places, skirting the Emerald Coast and using the islands of Soffi and Mortorio as natural buoys. They fall within the Maddalena Archipelago National Park, but in turn the two islets, along with a third called “Le Camere,” make up a small archipelago, which is part of the Emerald Coast. Soffi Island faces Capriccioli Beach, while Mortorio Island, the largest of the group, faces the Romazzino shoreline.

Both are granite in origin and due to their pristine ecosystems are ideal destinations for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. Soffi is flat and without large inlets but with four delightful coves, real natural pools surrounded by pink rocks. Mortorio, on the other hand, has steep cliffs reaching up to 80 meters and is characterized by gorse vegetation. Divided in two by a tongue of land, it is dotted with small coves with sheltered beaches and almost always calm waters.

The two courses of the Vela Cup Costa Smeralda

In case of good wind, the TAG Heuer Vela Cup Cala dei Sardi – Costa Smeralda/Porto Rotondo fleet will follow a course of about 20 miles: starting from outside Porto Rotondo and heading towards Mortoriotto (reef in front of Mortorio), turn around and descend back towards the Gulf of Cugnana leaving the islands of Mortorio and Soffi on the left. The finish is in front of the Marina dii Cala dei Sardi. On the other hand, the second course, in weak winds, is 13-15 miles, reduced by passing through the channel between Soffi Island and Mortorio.

The sail/race is open to all

The TAG Heuer Vela Cup Cala dei Sardi – Costa Smeralda/Porto Rotondo is open to all types of racing and cruising boats, small cabin cruisers and catamarans. Vintage, classic and “youngtimer” boats, i.e., hulls at least 20 years old, will also be present. There will be no need for a tonnage certificate to participate and only a mainsail and jib are needed to enter the “cruising” category. Those with competitive aims, on the other hand, may register in the “regatta” category. Then if you are not a boat owner, you can rent the boat directly from NSS Charter, register for the event with the discount, have fun and then enjoy your cruise.
