At VELAFestival you walk surrounded by sea myths

Give or treat yourself to a subscription to the print + digital Journal of Sailing and for only 69 euros a year you get the magazine at home plus read it on your PC, smartphone and tablet. With a sea of advantages.

exhibition_velafestivalWalking along the docks of the fourth edition of VELAFestival (Santa Margherita Ligure, May 5-8), this year you will be “surrounded,” literally, by the history of sailing. In fact, for the first time, the great myths, boats, and adventures of the sea will go to make up a large exhibition spread along the entire route. Of course, we have divided it by subject areas.

exhibitionWe then begin our ideal path… Shortly after you enter the VELAFestival, you will be greeted by the boats that have made sailing history. Two examples? The impressive prow of Mari Cha IV or the timeless elegance of the Star. Our (and your) journey among the boats then continues by going on to discover those hulls that have, in different eras, been able to conquer the oceans: we could not miss the Pen Duicks of the Tabarly myth, to get all the way to the giant multihulls that we see today flying (and sometimes capsizing) on the water…

Here we are at the Sail Square, one of the beating hearts of our festival. Turn right, descending to the Beach Village. Don’t be surprised if you feel you are being watched: the sea- and wind-scarred faces of the greatest sailors of all time (and their stories) accompany you along the way. What better place than our widespread exhibition to also introduce you to the life and achievements of Italy’s greatest sailor, Agostino Straulino, told in five panels over two meters each? Facing this section of the exhibition here are the first ten panels chronicling the first two decades of the Journal of Sailing through our most beautiful covers.

exhibitionThe second two decades (told in ten other panels) you will find them instead by going back to the special VELAFestival Events Area, where you can also enjoy our Video palimpsest, featuring the best of sailing footage: from regattas to major events, through our trials and some great films such as Deep Water, where we retrace the first solo round-the-world race back in 1969.

The more sporting aspect of sailing then awaits you as you continue along the main dock, just past the Piazzetta della Vela. Could we have forgotten the excitement of Azzurra, Moro di Venezia or Luna Rossa in their hunt for the America’s Cup? Also, do you remember how to dress years ago for boating? Don’t worry, we will remind you by taking a dip into the past, back to the time of “stiff” yellow rubber oilskins…
