Perhaps one of the big problems in recreational boating has been solved, recycling a fiberglass boat and giving it a second life. The secret lies in Elium, a new liquid, acrylic-based thermoplastic resin intended to replace thermoset plastics in composite manufacturing. And most importantly, recyclable. The manufacturer Arkema, to demonstrate the goodness’ of its product built a boat using this new resin, which it presented in Paris. It is a Mini 6.50 prototype that will participate in major Mini class regattas.
Technically, Elium processes like thermosetting resins, offering advantages in curing speed, light weight, cost-performance ratio, and recyclability. In addition, these materials are suitable for both semi-structural components and applications that require good aesthetics.
The resins can be mixed with glass or carbon fibers and molded using the same processes in use for processing traditional thermosetting resins. Once printed, the components can be welded or glued and, at the end of their useful lives, are easier to recycle.
