The Vismara 62 Yoru and the Swan 98 Drifter Cube after departure from Las Palmas

I drop everything and make the Ocean. What sailor has not thought this at least once in his or her life. But in the end, you don’t have to drop everything to cross the Atlantic, and it can be easier than you imagine. The solution is called ARC, the Atlantic Rally dedicated to cruisers, which each year takes the diverse fleet of participating boats from the Canary Islands, departing from Las Palmas, to the Caribbean, arriving in St. Lucia, after 2700 miles. In fact, it is a way to make the Atlantic crossing first and foremost safely, given the support provided by the regatta organization, which is also responsible for crew training.

ARC 2021 AND THE ITALIAN BOATS

The 2021 edition has just started with as many as 140 boats and also several Italian crews chasing their dream. Scrolling down theentry list we find Paternรฒ-Marchi’s Vismara 69 Nacira (with two-time Sailor of the Year Ambrogio Beccaria on board), Gino Neglia’s Najad 37 Bel Ami, Luca Davoli’s Bavaria C57 JK Sail, Aldo Fumagalli’s Neel 47 Minimole, Francesco Da Rios’ Sun Odyssey 52.2 Mizar III, Luigi Sala’s Vismara 62 Yoru and Giorgio Passarella’s Swan 98 Drifter Cube.

A very heterogeneous fleet the Italian one, ranging from sporty and “fierce” boats to others much more cruise and with family crews. After all, the ARC is a big party; it cannot be defined as a regatta but precisely as a “Rally,” in fact, competitors are even allowed to start the engine and then report at the finish line how many hours of riding have been done.

But the underlying concept of the ARC is away from rankings, which are there anyway, and is first and foremost a way to have a unique experience in peace and “playing” near other boats. Of course, there are those who also participate in this Rally with a very sporting bent, but these are a minority of boats-the large community of ARC cruisers are the real heart of this event.

The course this year promises to be full of weather “obstacles,” starting with a vast area of little wind positioned to the west of the Canary Islands, ready to bar the way for the fleet. In fact, those who do not intend to turn on their engines are already heading south to chase the trade wind, and then begin the waltz of ocean jibes, destination Caribbean.
