A fairy tale that of Leonardo Fioravanti, fresh under-18 surfing champion. Born 17 years ago in Cerveteri, on the Roman coast, he is the new under-18 world surfing champion, having just captured the title in Oceanside, California. This means that if surfing becomes an Olympic discipline at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (as has been proposed by the organizers of the Tokyo Games, but the final word rests with the IOC, which will decide next year in Ri0) we have a real talent ready to bring home a medal. A wunderkind who has been living in Hossegor, France near Biarritz but especially near the waves coming in from the Atlantic Ocean for the past five years, Leonardo surfs every day to train.
A talent recognized even by our French cousins at Le Monde, who are certainly not easy on compliments but recently called Leonardo a “little genius of the waves.” A dream life: on the board since he was six years old, today Leonardo travels the world thanks to sponsors that allow him to travel and compete from Los Angeles to Sao Paulo, from Europe to the United States, from Hawaii to Indonesia (where he believes the best waves are encountered), not forgetting Australia, of course. A boy so talented that he even had the king of surfing, Kelly Slater, an 11-time world champion, “inconvenienced,” who heaped praise on the very young Italian (the two even happen to train together). But Leonardo Fioravanti more than a nice surprise is a convincing reconfirmation, just take a look at his Palmares: silver Under 16 in 2013, fifth among Under 18 in 2014. This year the title is his because he was able to surf beyond his limits. And now we just have to wait for the podium in Tokyo 2020.
