A breaking news story would have Tania Cagnotto hired by Oracle as a diving trimmer. Joking aside, it seems that the next America’s Cup, in addition to being an insanely fast race between the buoys, will be a challenge to get through the trials with all hands on board.

Hardly a week goes by that there is not a man overboard during testing of the AC 50 ahead of the next America’s Cup. The last in the series was James Spithill, who performed a plastic dive (complete with a hand to plug his nose) coming out of a wall change. Indeed, in the images we present, Spithill can be seen engaged in the usual wheel-to-wheel jog, but the movement of the catamaran increases his momentum, causing him to reach the rudder too fast. Rather than risk falling awkwardly just below the boat, risking no small amount of risk, Spithill preferred to go along with the momentum and dive away from the AC 50. Will it therefore be an elimination America’s Cup? The security problem remains, and it seems serious.
