The AC World Series stage in Muscat, Oman, has concluded. The event had something of a historic feel to it: in fact, this is the first time that the international circus of the world’s most famous regatta has landed in a Middle Eastern country (after stops in Portsmouth, Gothenburg, and Bermuda), a choice that has rewarded the sultanate, which with Oman Sail, the organization founded by the royal family, has contributed to the growth of sailing in Muscat over the past eight years. A sign of the new times, and the new geography of money that is going to emerge. For the record, Ben Ainslie’s BAR team won, but leading the overall standings remain Team New Zealand’s Kiwis
MAX SIREN: “I MISS RED MOON, WE NEED TO WIN TO BRING CREDIBILITY BACK TO THE CUP”
Team that counts on the services of our own Max Sirena, “exodus” from Luna Rossa, as a manager with technical and sporting expertise: we interviewed him for you:
Everyone is talking about the challenge between you, Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle, the defender. How are you experiencing it?
“We are used to working by looking in our own house. With an eye on opponents, however, the focus is on us, on the performance of our catamaran“.
You are who have been one of Luna Rossa’s “deus ex machina” for so many years, tell us: is the New Zealanders’ method of approaching the regatta and the Cup campaign in general different?
“Let’s say I found many similarities. The team does not have a pyramid structure, just as was the case with Prada. This is very important because it allows everyone to express their ideas and be heard. Then there is Grant (Dalton, ed.) who is good at managing everything to the best of his ability. To put it in the Anglo-Saxon way, we are really into shape. The team has grown so much since I joined, 8 months ago“.
How sorry are you not to be there with Luna Rossa?
“I never hid it. For me, leaving Luna Rossa was a major shock, because I had put my all into building the team. But by joining New Zealand, I had a chance to fulfill another dream, a dream I had nurtured as a young boy. Those who know me well also know my philosophy: out of defeat comes opportunity. And I want to exploit this one 100%“.
Why?
“Because, by winning the Cup, this very confusing edition of the Cup (too many privileges to the defender) we could bring the ‘old jug’ back to a dimension of greater credibility.”
IF THE CUP YOU WANT TO SEE THE WALLET YOU HAVE TO OPEN
Too bad we won’t be able to see the exploits of Max Sirena and co. in Italy. Or rather, if we want to enjoy them we have to shell out, after downloading the America’s Cup App (for iOS or Android devices) $7.99. For those who want to subscribe to all 2016 events instead, the cost is $27.99. This is the only way to watch the regattas, as no Italian television network has purchased the rights. What a contradiction for the America’s Cup, which was supposed to be the one of the “social generation,” and instead has no free online streaming!
At this link you will find a list of all the foreign networks that will broadcast the event free-to-air:
