Luna Rossa owner Patrizio Bertelli and Alinghi owner Ernesto Bertarelli talk to each other. What’s on their minds? Bringing the next edition of the Cup to Sardinia. We explain why

In Europe, in the Mediterranean, in Italy, in Sardinia in Cagliari. This will most likely be the venue for the next America’s Cup in 2024/2025. All this happens, of course, if Luna Rossa wins the 36th America’s Cup, beating the New Zealanders.
The statement to Corriere della Sera by Patrizio Bertelli, the grand chief of the Italian challenge, was clear: “Thereis an idea with Ernesto (Bertarelli, patron of Alinghi who won the Cup in 2003, ed.) that Alinghi be Challenger of Record.” And listen to Bertarelli’s own statement, “We will be following the America’s Cup races very closely in the coming weeks …“.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO CAGLIARI
What’s on their minds? Add to these statements the large investment Prada/Luna Rossa has made in the port of Cagliari for its base, which has room to accommodate other bases of other teams as well. Then add the fact that Max Sirena (the operational boss of the Italian challenge) has taken up residence in Cagliari.
We finish by recalling that Ernesto Bertarelli, a Swiss passport holder but born in Rome, was the man who, having won the Cup in 2003, invented a new format for the first European edition in the Cup’s history. The 2007 one was held in Spain, in Valencia, which took advantage of the opportunity to remake the city and become a coveted tourist destination. It was, above all, the record edition in the history of the world’s oldest sports event, with 12 participants from 10 nations, including China.
WHY THE AMERICA CUP WOULD BE FINE IN EUROPE
Bringing the America’s Cup to Italy and Europe for the second time would not only be a source of pride for us Italians and Europeans. It would also be a colossal business, a unique economic revitalization opportunity for the entire old continent and for us in particular. One thing is the Cup “down under,” in New Zealand. Other business is in Europe, at home.
