Thanks to Matteo Salamon, thanks to his ten years of dedicated work in research and documentation collection, thanks to his incredible passion for the Swans signed by Sparkman&Stephens, today we are fortunate to be able to browse through a book that brings together within its pages the entire history of a sailing legend. As the very title of the volume “Sparkman&Stephens – A Legend” says, these boats and their stories are one of the greatest legends of the sailing world. Legend obviously understood in its sense of exaltation and exemplarity. On Thursday, November 17, 2016, at 6 p.m., at the Salamon & Co art gallery on Via S. Damiano 2 in Milan (free admission), the world premiere will be officially unveiled.
TEN YEARS OF “LABORS”
A unique work in the world: a book entirely devoted to the history of the Swan sailboats built by the Finnish Nautor shipyard and designed by the American firm Sparkman & Stephens, and the proceeds of which will be donated entirely, at the author’s behest, to charities working in the field of aid to children and adolescents.
For the first time in history, design plans are published, as well as water lines and the most beautiful photographs of the S&S Swan taken while sailing and racing. But not only that. This 288-page “bible-book” also collects the list of all S&S Swans as they are listed on the original certificates, texts by experts such as Juan Corradi, Daniele Fuร , Matti Waris, honorary chairman Pekka Koskenkylรค and especially Lars Strรถm aka “The Professor,” the engineer former technical director of Nautor who has experienced the history of S&S Swans firsthand since 1972 to the extent that he knows every construction detail. A reference text then, which, after the author’s preface, unfolds in about ten chapters, from how the Swans came into being to the shipyard’s 50-year history. The final part of the volume, houses a list of all the original Swan S&S names that came out of the shipyard and a series of technical articles. For each of the fifteen different models, in addition to the data sheet, the number of hulls built, the period in which they were launched, and a brief history of them are given.
