On December 26 each year, Australia and more specifically Sydney pauses to witness the most iconic of offshore races: the Rolex Sydney to Hobart (628 miles), the toughest, toughest and most mythical of the “600-mile peaks.” The regatta record is 1g 9h 15m 24s set by LDV Comanche in 2017, the year there was Wild Oats’ resounding disqualification for an infraction shortly after the start. A total of 157 boats will be entered for the 75th edition: the smallest boat in the fleet will be Australian Ian Gannon’s Traditional 30 Take Five.
Once again this year for real-time victory will be a super challenge among the 100-foot maxis. The line of honor will be a five-way affair between Wild Oats XI, Comanche, Black Jack, Info Track and SHK Scallywag .
As always, the overall victory of the Sydney to Hobart will be awarded on handicap time under IRC rules and will go to the first boat in the overall standings. The weather forecast heralds a fast and windy start and first part of the race, before the great unknown of Bass Strait and the passage into Tasmania before the finish in Hobart.
