45TH SAIL – 1981-83. From Admiral’s “almost goal” to Azzurra-mania!

Each week, three Sail Newspaper covers from our archives. In anticipation of the special issue celebrating the 45th of the GdV that we are preparing for you, on newsstands and digitally in October, we tell you, year by year, the story of sailing by big facts. 1981-83: FROM ADMIRAL’S “ALMOST GOAL” TO BLUE-MANIA!

1981. All of Italy is cheering for the first time for competitive sailing. The Italian team goes one step closer to winning the Admiral’s Cup (which effectively constituted the offshore team world championship), hopes crumbled only at the end, but sailing became popular.

1982. All crazy about Cino Ricci, team leader for Italy’s first participation in the America’s Cup. The name of the boat is revealed; it will be called Azzurra. The Sailing Newspaper is holding a competition to join the crew. Thousands of requests will come in.

1983. The unthinkable happens, after 132 years the Americans lose the America’s Cup. The Sailing Newspaper explains how the Australians managed to win. Thanks to the secret “fins” on the keel. We told you the story HERE.
