Andrea Vallicelli

Andrea became famous because he was the designer of Azzurra, the “real” one, the one that introduced 60 million Italians in 1983 to what sailing is and why it is so fascinating. But Andrea Vallicelli’s merits are not only these.

Vallicelli, an unmistakable signature

Vallicelli is the first Italian designer who became world famous. His boats bear his unmistakable signature; you recognize them immediately. And this is what makes a “great” designer or one of many: the recognition of his work.

In the valuable book just published by Skira(Yacht Design by Andrea Vallicelli, 28 x 24 cm format, 312 pages 216 colors and 140 b/w, € 70) you will find dozens and dozens of projects, dozens of images (many taken from the archives of the Giornale della Vela) and precise descriptions of the projects.

Because Andrea has always been a “precise,” of few essential words. It is his plans that speak for him.

If a boat is apt, you recognize it immediately

Andrea’s most beautiful sentence, which I personally remember, he said in Porto Cervo some 30 years ago. “You know Luca, an apt boat you can recognize it right away, when you see it on the dock, from the stern. It has to be nice to see, because people especially see boats when they are docked. And then, again from the stern, you recognize if that boat is apt or not. Right away.” We were in front of the 1979 Brava, one of his most famous and successful boats. And indeed, from the stern it was beautiful. Like all of Andrea Vallicelli’s boats.
