teakdeckingSecond installment of our special issue dedicated to refitting. With the good season over, summer cruises and fall weekends still warm, it is now time to enter the winter phase, which for every shipowner means one thing: tune-ups, checks, optimization, in a word refitting, getting back in shape. The question of the day is.

2. I need to replace the teak on the deck, what do I do?
If you have teak laid down on your deck, inevitably, after so many procrastinations, there comes the fateful moment when you can no longer stand by and watch the ruined wood and must decide to take action. The complete replacement of this valuable wood in the deck is very expensive, especially if, in order to have a long-lasting result, one relies on the skill of a good craftsman. More and more owners are choosing to remove the teak and return to the fiberglass deck because it weighs less and requires less maintenance. There are different color and “grain” options of the non-slip to be applied on the deck, depending on how the boat is used. However, a plastic deck warms as often as and perhaps more than teak, and the real advantage remains in terms of economics. However, one may consider replacing it with a synthetic-teak-like material whose difference from the original is hardly noticeable, lasts much longer, and offers heterogeneous choices regarding slat geometry and colors.

bettertteakhdc3-1170x845No to plastic? No to teak? The solution is there. Replacing teak is one of the most expensive interventions. If you prefer to save money, there is a viable alternative to returning to the fiberglass deck, which is a synthetic material, a kind of teak “that is not teak.” Is lighter and faster to lay. And it is also cheaper: it can cost up to 40 percent less (the price already rubberized is about 140 euros per square meter and about 450 per square meter with installation and transport). The main advantage of these systems is price, good viscosity resulting in easier coment filling during processing, and easy availability.
