Oct. 15, 8:45 a.m. – Nearly four days have passed since the departure in Alicante, and the situation has still changed: the seven boats, enclosed in 16 miles, are off the Moroccan coast and edging.Team Brunel, which was in the lead yesterday, dropped to second to last place, confirming the continuous change of positions.

IMG_3195.PNGPROVISIONAL RANKING
Currently the frontrunner is Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (skipper Ian Walker), which commands 5784.9 miles from the first leg destination, Cape Town. They are followed by the French-Chinese of Dongfeng Race Team, captained by Charles Caudrelier at two miles, who are in turn tailed, also at two miles, by Charlie Enright’s Team Alvimedica (with our own Alberto Bolzan aboard). Half a mile behind is big fight between Team Mapfre, Team SCA and Brunel, playing it out in a mile and a half. Bringing up the rear, a full 9 miles behind, Chris Nicholson’s Team Vestas Wind.

Oct. 14, 10 a.m. – After 2 days and 20 hours of sailing from the start in Alicante, the situation in the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race is more uncertain than ever. Although it is too early to tell, the one-design formula seems to be working. Ranking changes occur with a speed and frequency somewhat reminiscent of 125 motorcycle racing. Currently, VO65’s fleet is in front of the coast of Morocco, having passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, and is heading south. It is nearly 6,000 miles to Cape Town, the first port of call of the 2014-15 VOR.

PROVISIONAL RANKING
For what it’s worth (given the constant changes at the top), Bouwe Bekking’s Dutch Team Brunel leads the provisional standings, a few hundred meters behind are the guys from Alvimedica (aboard is our own Alberto Bolzan), while in third is Ian Walker’s Abu Dhabi. Iker Martinez’s Team Mapfre is fourth, Dongfeng led by Charles Caudrelier fifth, and Team SCA’s girls Sam Davies and co. leading after Gibraltar have dropped to sixth. Chris Nicholson’s Danish Team Vestas closes the rankings. But we repeat, quoting Vasco Rossi: anything can happen. Crews are concentrated in 6 miles!
