A story that has the unbelievable. Reg and Jason McGlashan (65 and 38) are an Austrian father and son who traveled from kangaroo land to the United States, Rhode Island, to pick up a sailboat purchased on EBay. The two intended to set sail from the East Coast of America aboard the Sedona (that was the name of the boat) to their hometown of Port Macquaire. We are talking about almost 9,000 miles: a truly daunting task, even for the most “seasoned” ocean sailors, especially given the winter period and the extremely unstable weather conditions that characterize the North Atlantic. A blizzard surprised the pair a few miles from the start, devastating the boat. The McGlashans radioed for help and were recovered by the Boston Coast Guard about 140 miles off the Massachusetts Coast in the middle of the night.
SPECTACULAR RESCUE
In the video we show you, the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter operation is really problematic, due to poor visibility, high wind, and one degree temperature. Father and son were brought to safety without injury: the boat was lost, and it is certain that for a while the McGlashans will sit quietly on land, having learned that a crossing (a very long one, moreover, almost three times as long as the Mini Transat!) can be madness if one is not an experienced sailor (and the two proved this: had they not consulted the weather reports?).
