The Italian leg of the Red Bull Foiling Generation concluded in Malcesine. Before explaining in detail what it was all about, let the pictures speak for themselves.
ADRENALINE AND DESIRE TO FLY ON LAKE GARDA
WHAT IS THE RED BULL FOILING GENERATION
The new world circuit is reserved for talented sailors between the ages of 16 and 20, who are given the opportunity to compete in two-person crews aboard the innovative Flying Phantom catamarans. The Red Bull Foiling Generation this year consists of seven stages held in seven nations Japan, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Russia and France. The formula for each stage involves a series of selection races that are very challenging for the crews and at the same time spectacular and engaging for the spectators watching from the shores. Each boat is distinguished by a color: red, yellow, blue or gray. Aboard all boats a crew of two. The top two finishers advance to the next round, while the losers have a second chance to qualify with a repechage round. The winners of each individual event select themselves to participate in the world finals in 2016.
SHOW ON GARDA
The winners of the Italian leg (Matteo Pilati, 18 years old from Brenzone (Verona), bearer of Fraglia Vela Malcesine and Francesco Rubagotti 20 years old from Chiari (Brescia), member of Fraglia Vela Desenzano) with this success, qualify for the world finals of the event to be held in 2016, in which crews representing seven nations (Japan, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Russia and France) will participate. The lightning-fast Flying Phantoms propelled by the Ora, the characteristic local wind, literally flew over the water thanks to their foils, the J-shaped drifts that allow the boats to rise over the water like hydrofoils and reach speeds of more than 35 knots (70 km). The twelve blue athletes aged between 16 and 20 years still competing at the end of the elimination phase participated with enthusiasm and determination in the semifinal races and the final, the last race, the one without appeal, contested in a tense wind (15 knots) during which, in a crescendo of agonism and competitiveness, there was no shortage of twists and turns. Second place went to Tuscans Ettore Botticini and Simone Busonero (Compagnia della Vela Grosseto), while third place went to Romans Gianluigi Ugolini, 16, and Giulio Zizzari, 18 (Compagnia della Vela, Rome).
