alicante-inportThis edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will be the first to be run in pure monotype conditions. The boats are really all the same: this was demonstrated in the inaugural inport race in Alicante, Spain, where for the first time all seven VO65s that will leave for the first leg of the Volvo on Oct. 11, destination Cape Town, South Africa, faced each other. Although the inports will not affect the round-the-world standings (in fact, they will count toward the inport series standings and will be used to resolve any ties), the crews took them seriously, and there was no shortage of entertainment.

In the end, victory went to the Turkish/American-flagged team Alvimedica, with Charlie Enright as skipper and with our own Alberto Bolzan on board. A triumph on a razor’s edge, a handful of seconds ahead of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing led by Olympian Ian Walker. In third place were the Spaniards of Mapfre led by Iker Martinez. It looked very much like a dinghy race: suffice it to say that the Danes of Team Vestas Wind (skipper Chris Nicholson) finished in last place after rounding the first windward mark in the lead. Fourth were the Dutch of Team Brunel (skipper Bouwe Bekking), fifth the Chinese of Dongfeng Race Team and sixth the girls of Team SCA.
