We are at the Dauphin Island Race in Mobile Bay, Alabama. These incredible images were shot with an action camera from aboard a Catalina 36 that was participating in the 18-mile race. The jury decided to stop the race, but too late. The competitors as they were returning to land were hit by a storm that literally tossed 40 people into the water causing carnage: five dead and one missing.
We show you the most dramatic part of the video. The team has prepared by wearing oilskins but does not expect a storm of such intensity. “We thought it would be the usual storm in Mobile Bay. We got used to it,” recounted Josh Edwards, the sailor who filmed it all, “But unfortunately it wasn’t.” In the video, Josh’s mother, who was at the helm, calls out wind speeds: she goes so far as to call out “58 knots.”
