9th March 2014. ENGLAND, The Solent. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. The first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race (6,847 theoretical miles, from Alicante, Spain, to Cape Town, Republic of South Africa) has a winner: it’s Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Azzam, skippered by Ian Walker, which was just 2 miles ahead of the French-Chinese crew of Dongfeang Team Race, skippered by Charles Caudrelier. A truly pulse-pounding finish, with the Dongfeng boys coming dangerously close aided by the fact that ADOR entered a pool of becalmed. The Chinese have really shown that they know what they are doing: they have had two breakdowns but have always managed to come out of them, staying in close contact with the Arabs. Let’s review with some videos the last moments of this first leg, waiting for the arrival of the other boats (in third place for now Team Brunel, then Team Vestas Wind, Alvimedica, MAPFRE and Team SCA).
