We boarded the schooner America, the only faithful reproduction in circulation of the legendary schooner that won the Hundred Guineas Cup in 1851-a boat you can admire and visit during the TAG Heuer VELAFestival in Genoa (April 10-13). Although it is a copy launched in 1967(find the boat’s history here), America has acquired a very high historical value because the original schooner was destroyed while in storage in a shed in the late 1940s. A few pieces were saved from the demolition: one of them, highly prized, is on board America and you can touch it with your own hands. This is the original stove that heated the salon of the winning boat of what would later become the America’s Cup. You will also find other original pieces, including some lamps.

A BOAT BORN TO SAIL
Teak and American mahogany were used extensively in the construction of America (which now belongs to the Schooner America foundation, and is in Italy despite the fact that the Americans tried to buy her during the last America’s Cup) (impossible to find in 1967 the rosewood from which much of the interior of the original was made). The salon is the only “luxury” in a 38.90-foot boat born to sail: the master cabin is spartan, with a small double that you would not struggle to find aboard a 35-footer today. There is only one guest cabin with a double bed, then space for the crew in the forward area, with kitchen, women’s area and men’s area. Fascinating engine room, with the original 1967 two-stroke diesel engine.
