Would you like to know that this summer, if you keep your boat in an Italian port, the VAT on the berth, rented or bought, goes from 22% to 10%?
All this is possible, just liken the body of water where boats “sleep” to the VAT applied to a hotel room or the space occupied by an RV on land, which is precisely 10 percent. This is the regime enjoyed by tourist facilities in Italy. So why should a marina or marinas not be categorized to this type? There is a unique opportunity already today to correct this anomaly that, as usual, penalizes boating in Italy. For your information, in France you pay 9% VAT, and in Spain the taxation is also similar.
WHY DOESN’T THE BOAT HAVE TO BE LIKE THE RV?
The “culture and tourism” decree presented by Minister Franceschini is about to be enacted, it is enough to also include equating the stretches of water in ports and marinas, where boats are moored, to the areas where RVs are stationed, which already benefit from reduced VAT. The game would be done. And rest assured that the reduction in annual revenue, estimated at eight million euros, would be largely recovered if only a few thousand boats of the 40,000 that have abandoned our ports over the past three years returned to moor along our shorelines.
LIGURIANS’ INVENTED TRICK TO REDUCE VA TO 10 PERCENT
And there is also a second way, if it does not find a place in the Franceschini decree, to get the VAT reduction on moorings. The ploy has been devised by the Region of Liguria, which is poised to pass a regional rule equating the water areas of marinas with the parking areas of campgrounds and hotel rooms. The fancy name for getting the result is “Marina Resort.”
